About

The little company that wants your attention

Interesting Theatre began more than 35 years ago as an outreach of Young United Church. Our original aim was simple: create a small theatrical group to enhance the themes of the Church. Thus, we began with chancel dramas at Sunday services. However, Interesting Theatre soon branched out and became much more—major dramatic productions, musicals, radio plays, and Fringe productions. Our group expanded to include those outside the Church who wanted to be involved, but maintained the sense of fellowship that is at the heart of what we do.

Our original leader and inspiration was Ken Delisle who convinced us all that we were capable and even (gulp) talented enough to perform and raise money to support Young United Church’s mission in the West Broadway Community and beyond. Most of the members of IT are still active in theatre so many years later.

Now the troupe has a new challenge as we move into the retirement years: more time to pursue our passion for theatre! We write our own plays often dealing with the challenges of life in the latter years—the unexpected aches and pains of aging. Our productions are written for an audience of our peers, the ignored minority, who like us, must face the realities for which we were not prepared. Strangely, the works tend to be hilarious despite the serious content and are enjoyed by all ages. Pathos and comedy —a pleasant and moving mix.

The other area we have pursued is radio drama. At least once a year we perform radio plays which have proven extremely popular. Reprising radio dramas from the forties and fifties has provided a nostalgic outlet for our audiences and for our performers. Better still, we have our own radio sleuth, Elleston Liddell, who along with his beloved wife Pamela, have solved countless crimes. The Elleston Liddell plays are created by our own Tim Higgins and are eagerly awaited for their next adventure. Based on actual Manitoba history, the plays provide a unique avenue for our loyal audiences. The aspect of our troupe that so often goes unrecognized is the inner workings of IT—sound and light technicians, computer savvy wizards, stage managers and prepare yourself, our own band! We really have developed a team of creative experts. As well, in the last few years we have added a number of young, talented performers to our troupe. They have given us hope that IT will continue for a long time in the future.

Interesting Theatre is a thriving company that struggles to get more awareness in the public eye. At this time of so much disruption in our world, local theatre binds us together with themes to which we can relate. It is vital to get the word out. Let’s leave the world of AI and political turmoil behind, and breathe together as one creative community. Please take the time to attend our plays and see for yourself what Interesting Theatre has to offer
